and get paid?

From a billing prospective is it possible for our practice, gastroenterology, to begin doing EKG's for patients who be will having their procedure done at the hospital. I am not sure if this is billable, considering it is a requirement of the hospital and not us. The patients are always complaining about having to go to the hospital for priority testing and a lot of them don't go until the day of their procedure and this holds up the cases, etc. We were just wondering if this would be possible for us to do and bill.

Anyone have an answer on this, can a gastroenterologist bill for an EKG and get paid? (I cross posted this under gastroenterology, but wanted other opinions so I posted it here as well)

thanks! :)

We were trying to determine if it would make sense to buy the equipment and do the EKG ourselves, to make it easier for our patients. (instead of making them drive to the hospital, pay for parking, and end up spending quite a bit of time....as having anything done at a hospital can take time.) We weren't sure if our physician, a gastroenterologist, would be reimbursed for performing these services.

Also, we were curious how much the insurance companies pay for this, if you are billing for the professional and technical component combined.

Does anyone here currently bill for EKG's?

I don't see why they would not pay for it as long as it is a medical necessity but im not 100% sure though. I work for an internist and we do plenty of ekg's especially when its for a medical clearance. Medicare pays $22.38. The rest of the insurances all depend on your contract.

just check with the hospital to see if they will accept your ekg and not their own. The hospital i send patients to for pre-testing wont accept anything from anybody.
