Is there any info on if it is legal for a doctor to request a no charge office visit or surgery for personal reasons, physician colleagues or family members. We have had many discussions on if it can be entered as a no charge or posted and then do a professional fee adjustment??

When I have encountered this, it was preferred to put the charge in and do an adjustment. That way, all charges are still accounted for and the provider can see how much/how often he/she is providing services for free.

The OIG has a compliance regulation that states physicians are not allowed to no charge or provide for a discount services for friends families collegues or co workers.. also the AMA opinion statement states they do not sanction the practice of no charge for friends and families as it violates numerous state and federal statutes and regulations. If you do this then tread lightly it is a practice that is done but it is very much not sanctioned.
