Wiki documentation for treatment of a fracture

For non-displaced fractures you often bill out the fracture care code which has a 90 day global. Our docs state that they are initiating fracture care in their assessment. They also usually cast the fracture or place a splint. Since the fracture is non-displaced the treatment is to stabilize the fracture so it does not displace, and then watch it over time to make sure that it is healing. If the physician wants to bill fracture care, this should be stated in the dictation for that date otherwise it's up to the coder to guess, and that does not go over well. In addition, insurance companies feel like fracture care is paying the physician for doing nothing which is not true. The patient has to return every two to three weeks so the physician can make sure that the fracture is healing correctly. If it does not heal completely, other treatment options are explored.
