A patient was last seen in the office in 2013 for an E/M visit. In 215, comes in for a walk-in flu shot, administered by the provider. All that is billed is 90471 (administration of vaccine) (or G0008 for Medicare) and the specific vaccine code. Now, in 2017, the patient has a following E/M visit. Should the 2017 visit be a new or established patient visit?

The CPT E/M guidelines require a "face-to-face encounter" by the provider to maintain established patient status.

Does the administration of a shot by the provider, maintain established patient status? Is a 90471 considered face to face?

Thank you in advance

E/M

During 2015 did your provider took any of the information on the patient HPI/ reason for visit, ROS,exam?if not, then it is new patient.
