Patient has just had a kidney transplant and the provider was contacted by the donor network and notified that the donor had MRSA bacteremia. How do you code this? I have not been coding the MRSA bacteremia, as it is not yet confirmed in the patient. I typically code 996.81 (complications of transplanted kidney) and E878.0. Would others agree, or does someone know of a better way to capture this?

Thank you!!

You cannot code a complication that does not yet exisit. Just because the donor has MRSA does not mean the recipient will have it. I would code any test you have performed as screening.
