A patient presents to the ER with symptoms of withdrawal because he got to the clinic too late to get his methadone dose. I know to code 292.0 for withdrawal symptoms, but I am not sure which column of the drug table applies. I would like to choose the therapeutic use column since the methadone was prescribed and he was not abusing it. On the other hand, by missing a dose he was not taking it "exactly as prescribed." If you know the answer I would really appreciate it! Thank you.

An Ecode is not absolutely necessary as the withdrawal symptoms are not as a result of taking a drug. If the patient was experiencing signs or symptoms after taking the methadone - then you would use the therapeutic use colomn.

I hope this helps.
