I am new to coding as well for behavioral health. My understanding has been that if a Physc NP sees a patient for behavioral health it needs to be coded with a DSM code. My provider is stating otherwise and stating that medical codes can be used. I would appreciate any help I can get and thanks for the help I have received thus far.

DSM provided the diagnostic criteria. you would need to submit with the proper ICD-10 code. I believe there is supposed to be a list of ICD-10 codes associated with each DSM code.

I agree with the previous reply. DSM is used for diagnostic criteria and often providers use this for there assessment wording. There is not always a 1 to 1 match with ICD-10 and the descriptions don't always match either. Our EMR has been mapped to only one ICD-10 option in many cases where there are more specific codes available. I am not aware of any comprehensive mapping tool from DSM to ICD-10. If it is out there, please post a link.
