Good morning!
Has anyone used this code before? If so, can you shed some light on when it is appropriate to use? The only thing that I can come up with is during a procedure the patient had a MI which determined the need for a heart catherization. I appreciate any feedback. Thanks :D

Cardiac catheterization as the cause of abnormal reaction of the patient, or of later complication, without mention of misadventure at the time of the procedure

Y84.0 is not a diagnosis code, it's an external cause code. Per the Chapter 20 notes, codes in this category are for "classification of environmental events and circumstances as the cause of injury, and other adverse effects. Where a code from this section is applicable, it is intended that it shall be used secondary to a code from another chapter of the Classification indicating the nature of the condition." It wouldn't be appropriate in the situation you describe since the catheterization did not cause the MI, but you could use this code if the provider indicated that the catherization caused some kind of complication for the patient. You would code the complication diagnosis first and only use this code to indicate the cause.
