Question I have a diagnosis of Metastatic prostate cancer to the pelvic bone. Now would I code it as 198.89, 185

The mets to the bone is 198.5 and the prostate is 185, you will list first the one that is being treated at this encounter.

Hi Debra,

Working as a radiology coder we sometimes do not know which CA is specifically being treated. Is it documented somewhere what we are supposed to use as a default? I use the primary 1st and mets 2nd (or whatever the client instructs me to use), but I sure would like to see this in writing because over the years I've been told 2 different things. In reading ICD9 guidelines to me should be the primary if treatment is unknown.

Opinions?

Thank you.
