I am seeking guidance as how to most appropriately code this combination. Am I to understand the ICD-9 book by stating that if a patient has Dysphagia 787.20 due to CVA, then the proper code would be 438.82 alone?

Or should I code the 438.82 as primary and the 787.20 as secondary...any thoughts...anyone, please?? Any info is greatly appreciated :)

you will code the 438.82 first and the 787.20 second. The 787.20 code states to code first the 438.82. The 438.82 code states the dysphagia is due to the CVA and the 787.82 states the type of dysphagia.

My book states to use the additional code to identify the type of dysphagia, if known (787.20-787.29) secondary to the 438.82
