Hello,

Can someone tell me if this is accurate or not? I was told that I can only use E codes on the E/M. Is that true or can I use the E codes with the other procedures that are being billed out?

Thank you

You can link the E-codes (external Cause codes) to any line item they are appropriate for, just be sure it is not the first-linked dx code, the external cause codes are always secondary codes.

...and only used on the initial visit. For example, the patient fell and sustained an open wound on the leg (complicated).
You would use 891.1 and E885.9 (fall, tripping). If the patient returns for care on the open wound, you would only use that code and not the E code again...
