In regards to the 2021 E/M coding using total time, would time a student spends with a patient be considered towards selecting the E/M?
 
Time spent by a student is not counted. The time applies only to "physician or other qualified health care professional" which would mean someone able to independently report a service. Typically MD, DO, NP, PA, CNM. There are others as well, but it is definitely not a student.
Also note if 2 clinicians are simultaneously providing service, you cannot count concurrent time. ie - both MD and PA are present discussing surgery risks/benefits/alternatives for 20 minutes, you cannot count as 40 minutes, only 20 minutes.
