What is the criteria for a psychiatrist differentiating between using evaluation & management codes vs psychiatric codes (90801, etc.) I have a psychiatrist saying she should be using evaluation and management codes versus 90801 psych codes.
 
If the psychiatrist is seeing the patient for a medical condition, she could bill an E & M code. Otherwise, she would bill only the psychiatric code.
