My physican works at a hospital in the ER. Can some one give me an example and or/billing rules on when to use E/M codes 99281-99285 for billing.

99281-99285 work just like any other office visit code, the only difference is the place of service. So, basically if the doctor does the history, exam, and mdm, then you just figure out your level of service and bill the appropriate code. The levels for the key components are a little bit different than others (lvl 3 code needs moderate MDM), and they require all 3 to meet or exceed, but other than that nothing too special about them. it's critical care that you need to be careful with, that's a whole different animal, but the guidelines are there to help you with code selection. hope this helps! :)
