EGD with esophageal balloon dilation and biopsy. There is a CPT assistant that states 43239 and 43249 can be coded together with a modifier on the same day, but can both be coded for the same site (Distal esophagus)? The CPT assistant doesn't mention this specifically.
 
yes they can if for separate reasons say K22.2 and K21.9 or path comes back esophagitis but there was a reason for the biopsy separate from the dilation.
Hope that makes sense.
Use modifier XU as the components in both codes are different and unrelated or 59.
