I have come across two separate AAPC instructors stating that Critical Care is considered untimed in the emergency room. I have an article here which states "Critical care codes also differ for facilities. CMS allows reimbursement only for 99291 Critical care, evaluation and management of the critically ill or critically injured patient; first 30-74 minutes, regardless of the time spent attending to the patient’s medical needs." Then an AAPC webinar which stated "Critical Care for the facility is not time-based, unlike professional billing."
I am trying to find resources to back this, but finding any resources for just facility coding is difficult enough already. Does anyone happen to already have additional resources that we might use in the likely event we have to fight insurance denials for this? Or does anyone have any experience billing 99291, untimed, for their facility?
