Wiki Explaining MD charge + Facility charge for same visit

Good Morning.

Does anyone have a good stock explanation for patients as to why they are getting an E&M charge from the MD and the same E&M charge from the facility?

Thank you!

Bernadette

the physician E&M represents the work of the physician only. The facility E&M represents the use of the facility space personnel and equipment. If this same service were rendered in a freestanding physician owned clinic, there would be one E&M but the charge would be higher to represent both components. The facility E&M in your example does match the physician level however that is not a requirement.
