Which external cause code would you use for a gunshot wound case like this - "Patient states, 'I was walking along minding my own business, and I heard a few pops. I started running and then realized I was shot.' Multiple GSWs to right thigh. No other info on circumstances." --Thank you
 
An external cause of a gunshot wound NOS is classified to W34.00XA - that most closely matches your documentation, but Y24.9XXA - Unspecified firearm discharge, undetermined intent - could also apply here. You will still need a primary code for the injury itself though, which in this case is an unspecified wound unless there is additional information in the documentation.
