Just wondering.....Can someone give a brief example of WHEN this code should be assigned. I have read that if a physician does not document a status, coders should NOT assign code E000.9 code (Unspecified external cause status). So basically what IS the intent of E000.9 if we are NOT to report it for an unspecified external cause? This makes no sense, so that is why I'm requesting an example to see when it might be reportable.

Hello, and thanks for your comment, but I already am aware of that. Please explain the statement from the ICD-9 that states"
"Do not assign code E000.9 Unspecified external cause status, if the status is not stated". Can someone explain and lay this out in a way that would be more easily understood? Basically, it seems like jaberwocky. I'm looking for one of those "AHA" moments!!
