36227 - for ECAs - is an add on code.

How are you billing if your doctor caths and images only the external carotids and nothing else?

Has anyone heard of potential changes to this code's status - changing it from an add-on to a stand-alone?

I have not heard of any potential changes.

Can you provide a report?
 
I have not heard of any potential changes to this codes status, yet. I asked this same question during a SIRS webinar last month. I was told then that the doctor would have to at least image the common carotid in order to selectively place and image the external carotid. Their recommendation would be to bill a common carotid cath placement w/angiography of extracranial carotid circulation- 36222.
