My physician is wanting to code 99144 with 64475, 64476 and 77003. Can he code the 99144 with these codes when he is doing them at an outpatient surgery center or hospital? He is performing the sedation.
It is my understanding that if the physician actually performs 99144 himself .. actually starting the IV, etc. then he is allowed to bill for it .. even if the procedure is done in an OP surgery center. If the RN "starts" the IV and the physician did not personally do so - then it should not be billed. It is not a reimbursable charge on the facility side because it is considered "inclusive" .. hope this helps!
Quick note: The physician does not need to start the IV or personally administer the anesthetics to bill for 99144. The physician must be trained in the administration of anesthesia and personally direct/oversee all medication and monitoring.
