I cannot seem to find this..what is the time frame that you can code a fall? I have a patient who fell roughly 3 weeks ago, has never been seen for it but comes into the ER with back pain related to the fall three weeks ago? Can I still use an E-code for this? I coded this as a fall but had a senior coder inform me that I can not do this? Is there a time frame on falls and how they are reported? If she has never been seen for this to my understanding you can code this as a fall?
 
The guidelines state to:
Assign the appropriate E code for all initial treatments
Assign the appropriate E code for the initial encounter of an injury, poisoning, or adverse effect of drugs, not for subsequent treatments, so I would code it if this is the first time patient has been seen for this injury and if the documentation supports it.
