Need a little help with this we have a patient that is seen individually and with dad, however 90846 is being selected when patient is seen during the scheduled family session but dad does not show. Should this now be billed as an individual session or can this still be billed out as a family session?

Instead of starting a new thread, since this would have been my topic. Looking for clarification, if I can get it: With the 90847, multiple family members MUST be present, correct? I have a provider who is trying to bill 90847 for couples counseling when only the patient is present, because they are discussing the relationship. She called it "couples therapy with one member present." I want to bill it as individual therapy, but I'd like verification on this opinion before I tell her she's wrong. Thanks!

She's wrong. There is no such CPT code as "couples therapy." It's family therapy. If only one person is there, it's individual therapy. It is not coded based on subject.
