The patient was seen by the doc in the hospital post op after a left carotid endarterectomy. This is his first visit seeing this patient. The pt developed a fever after the procedure. I was going to bill icd V67.09 as the primary icd with 780.61 as the secondary. Is this the correct way to bill this? As per the ICD-9 guildelines it states "A follow up code may be used to explain repeated visits. Should a condition be found to have recurred on the follow up visit, then the diagnosis code shouuld be used in place of the follow up code. " As per the ICD-9 guildelines icd 780.61 cant be used as the prim icd code.
thanks
