We have an 81yo pt who swallowed a saftey pin. Dr. went in with endoscope and removed with prolonged time of 1.5 hours. We normally do not use the accident codes with esophageal foreign body since it usually causes stricture. In this case however no stricture is found just the foriegn body. My Dr. is requesting that i get feed back on what DX to use for this. We have had trouble in the past getting the accident codes ( 900's) paid. So far I have 43247-22( modifier for prolonged procedure) What are thoughts on this please help!

You will need the 933 or 935 code depending on location and the E912 or E915 code whichever is applicable. There are additional E codes that may be necessary to communicate the full story. Have you used the E codes in the past with you 900 level codes?
