Someone asked me question, on fracture diagnosis coding, should we code to the type of treatment, not the type of the fractue?

I cant find a specific guideline on this. Any direction?

You have to code to the type of fx for the dx .. do you have a specific scenario for example?

aftercare is coded with the V54 code for aftercare for healing fx. The acute codes is used only for the acute tx.

So, in essense of aftercare vs active care, the treatment is driving the fracture diagnosis code?

Thus, code to treatment.

I thought you were talking about open vs closed treatment. But no you still code for the patient's dx. After the initial treatment the patient no long has an acute fx they have a healing fx so you code the V code for healing fx. I guess I am just not following your question line.

In response to this closed vs open dx, after the open fracture has been closed would the dx still be coded as open in follow up visits.

No it will be coded with the V54.x code for healing traumtic fx in ICD-9. ICD-10 CM coing is very different.
