If a fracture is described as LT comminuted transvers displaced fracture of the distal radius shaft how would this be coded? I entered it into my coding tool and it gave S52.322A. Any advice on how this fracture should be coded would be greatly appreciated. Lynn Kimsey, CPC, CPCO, CPMA, CPC-I, CEMC

Hmm...take a look at S52.352A which is Displaced comminuted fracture of shaft of radius, left arm, initial encounter for closed fracture.

The only difference is the word comminuted vs. transverse. I would have the doctor clarify whether the break is comminuted which is "a break or splinter of the bone into MORE than two fragments" or if it is transverse which is more of a clean break straight across the bone.
