Hello,

If a patient comes in for an OV and was then sent for an MRI and come back on a different day for the results.

8/2/16 - OV and he was sent for an MRI
8/13/16 - Had MRI done
8/19/16 - OV for the Results

Do you charge for the OV for the results of the MRI?

Any help would be Appreciated.

Your coding will depend on what was done

On the visit where the patient was told to get an MRI, do you have the key elements of an E/M documented? If you do, then yes. I have never seen a patient show up for an appointment who did not have some sort of exam before being told that an MRI was needed.

When the patient returns and reviews the MRI with the physician, these are inherently an counseling visits. Usually at these visits the three key components of an E/M are not performed. However, the physician will go over what is found on the MRI and then go over treatment options that are surgical and non-surgical depending on what is found. These visits can be either fairly brief or lengthy, so make sure that the amount of time going over the MRI is documented so you can bill it out since the three key components will not be documented.
