To anyone who has obtained their specialty credentials -

How difficult was it to obtain your general surgery certification and what did you do to prepare? I'm considering trying to obtain my specialty certification but I want to be prepared.

Thanks!

Hi Brandy,

I just took the exam and thought it was very easy - in fact I finished 1.5hrs before the allotted 5.5hrs. If I don't pass, I would be shocked.

I purchased the study guide and studied from that, however, I do surgical coding in many different areas daily, so that too helped.

The specialty exams have all been revamped for 2009, so finishing these new exams in 1.5 hours will not be possible trust me. You will need at least 2 years of general surgery coding experience in order to have a chance at passing it. I believe they will be offering the study guides as online modules instead of books for the '09 tests so you might want to check out the web site to be sure. Good luck, getting your specialty credentials shows that you are dedicated to forwarding your knowledge.
