If a General Surgeon admits a patient for pancreatitis and then a couple of days later performs a procedure for a tunneled cath for malnutrition is that considered related to the original diagnosis so that they could continue to bill for subsequent hospital visits with a 24 modifier.

Unless the subsequent hospital visits are specifically related to the placement of the catheter, then I would bill them with a 24 modifier.

-24 is used for patients being seen for a matter unrelated to why the patient is in the hospital...and because malnutrition developed during the hospital stay it's a secondary dx....therefore I don't think -24 applies
