I have a therapist wanting to do group therapy with parents of adolescents. The group program will "include a group for parents of the adolescents who will be in a different segment of the program."

In the past we were advised to use code 90853 ~ Group Pschycotherapy (other than of a multiple family group).

The coder suggestion is to use code 90849 ~ Multi-Family Group Therapy

Does anybody have experience with this situation or insight to which code should be used.

Thank you
Kim

We have two ADHD group sessions, one for the adolescents and another for their parents. We use the 90853 for the adolescents' group and the 90849 for the parents' group.

So then the question comes of what dx do bill for the pt's parents? You can't use the Pt's dx. What Dx do you use?

v61.20 - counseling for parent-child problem, unspecified

By definition, this covers:
Concern about behavior of child
Parent-child conflict
Parent-child relationship problem

Should the multi-family group therapy 90849 be billed under the patient or each individual parent?
