We have EMR and scan in the patient demographics, new patient history, HIPPA form, etc. in the account. Is it necessary to keep the hard copies for 7 - 10 years ? Curious what other practices with EMR's are doing.

We have scanned in the entire medical record, 10 years back at least, and are keeping hard copies until the physicians feel comfortable giving them up. It was a compromise so they would allow us to finally take on full scanning of records to clear out the office. I'm happy the project is over and we were able to get the records cleared out and into an electronic format, and they are happy because they can still grab the medical record if they need it.
