Just wondering if someone could please help with coding
Right hemicolectomy 44160 and Small bowel resection 44120
Very confused with how you actually determine which procedure gets the 59 modifier I do have the general surgery companion book and I also have encoder pro. I went onto Highmarks Medicare site and it looks to me like the 44120 is the column 2 procedure. (Does the code always with the lower RVU get the modifier) Please help
Thanks

Yes, the code with the lower RVU should get the 59 modifier. I think you are right, use the modifier with the 44120 code.

Yes, I was told at a seminar, I'm almost certain by Deb Grider, that the -59 always goes on the column two code, altho I was never able to find that stated in the CCI.
