Hi. I have a question with coding severe sepsis. When the documentation only states "renal failure determined to be due to her sepsis" and the renal failure was not specified as acute or chronic, and nowhere in the documentation stating severe sepsis, can we still code for the severe sepsis? Thank you.
 
Oh. It was a multiple choice question. One of the choices has a severe sepsis code on it and the other one doesn't have. I chose the one which doesn't have the severe sepsis code, just the sepsis code and I got it wrong. The correct answer was the severe sepsis code. Thank you.
 
ICD-10-CM guideline - IC1d(a)(iii)Sepsis with organ dysfunction If a patient has sepsis and associated acute organ dysfunction or multiple organ dysfunction (MOD), follow the instructions for coding severe sepsis.

Association is documented in "determined to be due to her sepsis."
