Wiki HIV-042 or V08

Hi Guys,

I had a very tough time with my team explaining abt a scenario. Please help me on this.

Pt has H/o HIV on HAART therapy. For this scenario can I code 042 or V08.

My perception is If a pt once diagnosed with HIV and started on treatment, the pt will be 042 through out the subsequent visits in life. If I am wrong please provide more information and scenarios to get clarified

Look in your coding guidelines. Once they are diagnosed with an HIV related illness such as AIDS, or pneumocystic pneumonia, then they will be coded as 042 status. Once they are symptomatic they will always be 042 status, you can never go back to V08. Otherwise they can be V08 and still receive prophylactic treatment.
