What department resolves ABN's in your workplace?

I don't know what you mean by "resolves" the ABN....but when the patient comes in and fills out his initial paperwork we get them to sign it after we go over it with them. Is this what you meant?

Sorry about that, yes, at what point is the ABN being presented to the patient? Is it the "front end" before labs or x-rays (for example) are done or after. The reason I'm asking is 2 of our coders are having to call physician offices and try to resolve ABN's. We would like to see them done at the front end.

Abn

The CMS website discusses the ABN's as follows:

"An initiation is the beginning of a new patient encounter, start of a plan of care, or beginning of treatment. If a notifier believes that certain otherwise covered items or services will be noncovered (e.g. not reasonable and necessary) at initiation, an ABN must be issued prior to the beneficiary receiving the non-covered care."

and

The ABN should be "Provided far enough in advance of delivering potentially noncovered items or services to allow sufficient time for the beneficiary to consider all available options"

Hopes this helps,
Lisa Gaines
