Can anyone please help me. A patient has passed away in the hopital after 2 days of being admitted and the Dr wants to charge a 99239 for writing up a death summary. Is that at all possible to charge a discharge code on the day the patient passed away?

When a patient expires, there is certain paperwork that must be filled out by the attending provider. Because of this, it is acceptable to charge a discharge. However, if my memory is correct, I believe you can only charge a 99238. If anyone else has information in this regard, I would appreciate the update as well.

response to hospital billing please help

yes, I agree with treetoad....99238 suffices....usually 99239 is used when a procedure/lab/radiology (something extra which takes a lot of time) is done
