If our physician has performed an extensive consult in the ED and the patient is later admitted to the hospital to become inpatient by a second physician would you code this visit as a 99233 or a 99223 or would you use the ED cpt codes for his service alone? The patient later passed away and our physician performed the death summary discharge as a 99239.

THe patient has Cigna insurance so 99255 will not work.

At the time of the consult, the patent was not an inpatient. You should code as such.
