Okay, I'm looking for some guidance. My physician performed heart surgery on a patient. Then 4 days later my patient goes into renal failure, unrelated to heart surgery as well as respiratory failure and vent dependence. I believe my physician's follow up visits are billable as he then guided the care of renal & respiratory failure. Your thoughts???

I'm thinking this is a very fine line. Your physician will need to document VERY well that these problems are in no way related. If that is indeed the fact, you can bill with a -24. HOWEVER, please use caution and again make sure your MD has documented that this is not related to the surgery.

I have a doc that bills for critical care in the post op period, but documents that the respiratory or renal failure were a pre-op condition.
