Internal Med biller here for professional services! I know for same day admit and discharge there are the same day codes 99234-99236, but what if the patient was discharged early afternoon from an inpatient stay and then came back to the hospital prior to midnight and was seen again for observation?
The patient came back in for symptoms/side effects of their previous issue that they were previously admitted then discharged for, so they are not the same diagnoses per say, but they are related. Can I bill both the 99238 and a 99222 on the same calendar day? Is there a different code that covers this scenario? Or am I only allowed to bill one or the other?
