Patient came for injury 10 days back and again he is coming to take CT and in the office visit there was a hematoma confirmed as per CT. Whether we can use E code in the second visit. Is there any duration till that time we can use E codes for the subsequent visits also. Can any one clarify..

E codes can only be used once on initial encounter per icd9 guidelines which state " assign the appropiate e code for the initial encounter of an injury, poisoning or adverse effect of drugs, not for subsequent treatment." hope that is helpful.

The hematoma should be coded then also a 905-908 code for the late effect of the injury and you can use a late effect E code as well just not the original E code.
