I am a payer - I've been receiving billing from a chiropractor for procedure 97022 (whirlpool), only the DC is performing "application of modality whirlpool hydromassage applied to the neck." I spoke with the patient who confirmed he has not received any whirpool therapy or been in a hubbard tank or submersion in a whirlpool.

What is the most appropriate code?
Is there any binding opinion on hydromassage?
Who is the resource that would determine the most relative code?

Thanks

Scott

Thanks MA. Do you know who or what is the binding resource on this code? Is there an opinion letter from a governing body on this issue?

Most payers have a policy that states that it must require clinical skill in order for a modality to be billable. Therefore, if it is available in the mall, such as "aquamassage" or one of those shiatsu massage chairs, it clearly can be done without the skills of a provider.
