When coding HTN HD with CHF, the code states to use additional code to identify the type of heart failure. I have heard that this code includes CHF, so, not to code I50.9 with it, and only to code the heart failure if you have a more specific code for the failure. Is this true in ICD 10? Or do you code both even if you have an unspecified CHF?

I50.9-
Heart failure, unspecified
Biventricular (heart) failure NOS
Cardiac, heart or myocardial failure NOS
Congestive heart disease
Congestive heart failure NOS
Right ventricular failure (secondary to left heart failure)
---------------------------------------------------------------
To specify type of heart failure we have to code unspecified heart failure - I50.9, even if I11.0 includes Hypertensive heart disease with heart failure.
