Does anyone know if there are guidelines saying when you should and shouldn't code 487. Do you have to have a positive test for influenza before you use the 487 code. If so then do you just code the symptoms?-

Good day. Per the ICD-9 guidelines, interpretation of test results by coders are prohibited. The provider should render the definitive dx to assign the 487 code. Default to the presenting signs and symptoms. Hope this helps.
