Under the K50-K52 section of codes, there is an excludes 1 with IBS. If ulcerative colitis and IBS are both supported with appropriate meds, which is more specific? *There is no resource that says the more specific dx is the option under the excludes 1 and I don’t believe a syndrome should be captured over a disease. Does anyone have some solid advice on this? Thank you in advance.
 
As per ICD-10 Chapter 18, Signs or symptoms that are associated routinely with a disease process should not be assigned as additional codes, unless otherwise instructed by the classification. So in this case its enough if only UC is is coded.
