Greetings,

We need some guidance on Alcohol use codes. Please help with clarification.

Subject: Trying to understand why or in which scenario a provider would use the following codes.

F10.9 Alcohol use, unspecified
F10.98 Alcohol use, unspecified with other alcohol-induced disorders
F10.982 Alcohol use, unspecified with alcohol-induced sleep disorder
F10.92 Alcohol use, unspecified with intoxication
F10.929 Alcohol use, unspecified with intoxication, unspecified
F10.920 Alcohol use, unspecified with intoxication, uncomplicated
F10.921 Alcohol use, unspecified with intoxication delirium

They do not fall under the category of abuse or dependence.
It is listed in the mental behavioral condition. But the use of alcohol, uncomplicated, is not a mental condition.

According to the AAP
Psychoactive Substance Use As with all other diagnoses, the codes for psychoactive substance use (F10.9-, F11.9-, F12.9-, F13.9-, F14.9-, F15.9-, F16.9-) should only be assigned based on provider documentation and when they meet the definition of a reportable diagnosis. The codes are to be used only when the psychoactive substance use is associated with a mental or behavioral disorder, and such a relationship is documented by the provider
