Hello,

If the provider states patient has an old meniscal tear, do we code M23.2- MMT and S83.2- with a S for the 7th char. for sequela.

Is there a proper time when an acute turns to chronic or is this determined by the provider?

Thank you for your help.

Michelle: I just finished answering this question from another Coder through direct contact. If you would provide me with your Email address, I will send you a copy. Also, I would refer you to the Blogs tab at my website, icd10orthocoder.com, where there is a Blog on coding knee pain, and which may be helpful to you as well. It is lengthy because of the complexities of the subject, but if you wade through it, it could help.

In short, however, if the meniscal derangement/tear is deemed to be "Chronic," you would only use a M23.0, 2, or 3 Code.

Respectfully submitted, Alan Pechacek, M.D.
