My question is simply this, our has been seeing an increased number of patients in his primary care practice that are using medical marijuana, he does not prescribe it for them but does notate the treatment in their charts; Should we be using ICD 10 code f12.90 cannabis use, uncomplicated on the claims or is this for drug use not prescribed by a practitioner?

Thank you for your input!

no the F12 codes are for patients that are not prescribed medical cannabis or do not live in a state where recreational use is legal. as medical cannabis is prescribed by a physician and legal in many states then the medical use is no different tan any other medical use of a prescribed medication. You can use the Z79 code for long term use of other drug. If your patient is in a state with legal recreational use then to mention that the patient of legal age uses cannabis is not different than a patient of legal age that uses alcohol. you code only if it is documented as a problem by the provider. treat legal cannabis the same as you do legal alcohol and prescription cannabis the same as any prescribed narcotic.
