My providers want to know why it is important to use more then one diabetes code to describe a particular patient condition even if they are only treating one complication.

Patient has Diabetic Neuropathy
Diabeteic Retinopathy
Diabetic Nephropathy

Today the patient is being treated for Diabetic Neuropathy, not the other two. Is it neccesary to document all three conditions and if so, why?

The ICD-10-CM Guidelines instruct, "Code all documented conditions that coexist at the time of the encounter/visit, and require or affect patient care treatment or management." For instance, if the diabetic nephropathy limits the use of certain medications to treat the diabetic neuropathy then both conditions should be reported.
