When coding with the F17.218 and F17.219, codes for Nicotine Dependence (cigarettes), does nicotine-induced disorders refer to behavioral and mental disorders only? I have tried to research and get conflicting information. Some articles give examples of using this code if COPD was caused by smoking. Other articles say it is only for mental and behavioral disorders (It is in the Mental, Behavioral Chapter).

My interpretation is that for COPD without withdrawal, remission or other mental disorders, it would be coded with the Use Additional Code F17.210 Nicotine dependence unspecified, uncomplicated. The first code listed would be for the COPD.

Thank you
